Chief Petr I. Dorogokupets, Dr. Sci. (Geol.-Min.)
The staff consists of 15 persons, among which are one academician, one doctor and eight candidates of geology and mineralogy.
The Laboratory of Petrochemistry, Geochemistry and Ore Genesis was set up in 1966 on basis of the team for Experimental Petrography and Mineralogy) and headed by F.A. Letnikov.
Main current lines of investigation:
The Laboratory is an acknowledged leader in the study of fluid regime of endogenous processes. The work on this problem is covered in 17 monographs one of which they republished in Australia. Within the span of thirty years, a unique databank has been compiled for gas chromatographic analyses of the rocks ranging in age from Early Archaean to Cenozoic.
Study the energy of geological process from the results on compatible equations of state of minerals, gases and chemical compounds that allowed calculating energy parameters of fluid, silicate and fluid-silicate systems of the lithosphere at P-T conditions of the crust and upper mantle.
Synergetics of geological systems is a new line of research developed by Academician F.A. Letnikov in the last few years. A monograph titled “Synergetics of geological systems” is the first published work covering discipline of this kind.
The obtained P-V-T equations of state enable consistent pressure calibration using either the ruby scale or equations of state of any of the reference substances (Ag, Al, Au, Cu, Pt, Ta, W, diamond, MgO). This solves problems of inconsistency between different pressure scales and enables accurate pressure calibration at elevated temperatures, where the ruby scale cannot be used.
The Laboratory does research on fluid regime of endogenous process in cooperation with the geologists from Russia and Kazakhstan. It fruitfully cooperates with the Institute of Geological Sciences and Academy of Mineral Resources of Kazakhstan (Alma-Ata), North Kazakhstan Association of Geologists (Kokchetav), Borovoe Geophysical Observatory (North Kazakhstan), and the scientists from Switzerland and France.
The Laboratory closely cooperates with the researches from the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry (IGEM RAS), Institute of Geology and Geochronology of Precambrian (IGGD RAS), and Joint Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy (OIGGM SB RAS). The prospects of fundamental research by means of the Laboratory are now evident. The approach employed in these studies provides modern conceptual fundamentals for description and solution of a large number of problems in the area of Earth sciences.
The Laboratory is a Russian leader in the study of fluid regime, energy of endogenous processes, and equations of state of solid bodies and minerals.
