All-Russian Conference entitled “Recent geodynamics of Central Asia and natural hazards: quantitative research findings”

The Third All-Russian Conference entitled “Recent geodynamics of Central Asia and natural hazards: quantitative research findings” with participation of scientists from other countries and the Second All-Russian Youth School-Conference on Recent Geodynamics. September 19-23, 2016, Akademgorodok, Irkutsk

The Conference is aimed at reviewing the preliminary results of a study of recent geodynamics in Central Asia and adjacent areas characterized by high rates of tectonic deformations, high seismicity, and active exogenous processes. High geodynamic activity is related to the occurrence of a variety of geologic hazards in the investigated area. The Conference will propose a quantitative-based approach to the study of processes and phenomena, which provides the possibility of their comparison and modeling. The Conference will include a special symposium on paleoseismology commemorating 100th anniversary of the birth of Viktor Prokopyevich Solonenko, an outstanding seismogeologist, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

In parallel with the Conference is holding the Second All-Russian Youth School-Conference on recent geodynamics.

The Conference will provide the coordination of relevant studies between research institutes in Russia and some foreign scientific centers.

Major topics to be discussed at the Conference:

  1. Quantitative assessments of late Cenozoic and present-day movements of Central Asia. Main factors determining geodynamic activity of the lithosphere.
  2. Destructive zones of the lithosphere in Central Asia: fault structure, state of stress, inheritance in the development at the present stage.
  3. Seismicity and paleoseismicity as a reflection of geodynamic activity of the lithosphere (symposium dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Corr. Mem. USSR Acad. Sci. V.P. Solonenko).
  4. Exogenous hazards in the zones of recent geodynamic activity of the lithosphere.
  5. Trends in the temporal variations of natural processes as a basis for their prediction. Preventive measures to improve natural hazard risk management.

Besides scientific reports, the Conference will include roundtable discussions of some problems and the ways of further collaboration between research teams and individual participants from different institutes and countries. The program of Youth School-Conference will include lectures delivered by leading scientists on major problems of recent geodynamics.

Between sessions of the Conference, there will be an excursion to historic places of the city including the Irkutsk Regional Memorial Decembrists Museum. After the Conference, there will be excursions to Lake Baikal including a visit to the Baikal Museum (Listvyanka Settlement).
